Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process of evaluating the likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic, cultural and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse. EIA is a requirement for new development projects in many countries all over the world. In Kenya, all development projects that are likely to have significant impacts on the environment are by law required to obtain an EIA license before they can be implemented. The application for an EIA license is in the form of a EIA project report prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit Regulations, 2003. The report is submitted to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for review and approval. For major development projects, an EIA study is required. A license takes between 45 – 60 days to process. It is therefore important that the developer initiates the EIA process well in advance before the project commencement date. The cost of the EIA is met by the developer. Ecolink Services Limited has been offering consultancy services in this area for more than seven (7) years.
